Dimension tolerances

WHAT CAUSES DIMENSION TOLERANCES?

Tolerances for textiles are significantly higher than for products made of metal or wood.

  • On the one hand, this is due to the properties of the fibres used. Cotton, in particular, can absorb a lot of humidity and water and emit it. This always affects the length of the fibres and thus of the entire fabric.
  • On the other hand, the elastic properties of textiles differ, depending on their structure.
  • Every machine or person measures under different tension, inevitably, this leads to differing results.
  • The fabrication of textiles is still a manual process. The tolerances for manual fabrication are always higher than for machine-made products.

DIMENSION TOLERANCES TO BE EXPECTED:

  • Oblique draft: +- 1.5 % of the cloth width

  • Length deviation: +- 3 %
  • shrinkage deviation: +- 3 %
  • Dimension differences for made-up textiles: +- 1.5 %

BEST PRACTICE IN HANDLING TOLERANCES DUE TO TECHNICAL FACTORS:

  • USE HIGH QUALITY TEXTILES: High quality velvet has a much higher dimension accuracy than cheap calico or molleton.

  • USE TEXTILES IN FOLDS: Textiles were "invented" and or fabricated to fall in folds. The use of smooth fabrics -without applying even tension – is an incorrect application from a textile point of view. Folds make differences in dimension invisible. Make sure to calculate some extra width into your material width.

  • FLAT SEWN CYCLORAMAS: Design your stage setting so that the side edges are invisible. You can apply tension at the edges to achieve a result free of creases, this is where and how tolerances can be accommodated.

COLOUR TOLERANCES

WHAT CAUSES COLOUR TOLERANCES? The dyeing- and finishing process is a highly complex procedure and many factors can cause colour dropouts. Dye works try to control these parameters precisely. This, however, is only possible within their technical means, resulting in dyed batches with slight differences.

BEST PRACTICE IN HANDLING TOLERANCES CAUSED BY TECHNICAL FACTORS:

  • BUY HIGH QUALITY TEXTILES: The higher the quality of the textiles, the less difference in colour. Controlling colour parameters is an expensive process, which is limited or not possible for cheap products.

  • USE TEXTILES IN FOLDS: Textiles were "invented" and or fabricated to fall in folds. The use of smooth fabrics -without applying even tension – is an incorrect application from a textile point of view. Folds usually make small colour differences completely invisible.

  • USE YOUR STAGE LIGHTS: Coloured stage lights can often "shine" colour differences away.

  • TALK TO YOUR TÜCHLER ADVISOR: Please inform us about the application planned. We will do their best to supply suitable pieces from warehouse stock. If we are informed of a special application, we will try to significantly undercut standard commercial colour differences in the dye factory.

This, however, can cause longer delivery times: the lower the tolerances, the higher the possibility of colours that don’t match and have to be redyed. Dyeing is a very time-consuming process, therefore, ample time for delivery must be taken into account.

DELIVERY TOLERANCES

  • WHY DELIVERY TOLERANCES OCCUR: The entire textile manufacturing process is complex and consists of many stages. Mistakes can occur in any production stage. Such mistakes partially have to be cut off the length of the material. This causes unforeseeable short pieces. Every fibre - especially natural fibre like cotton - shrinks during the manufacturing process. This shrinking process is taken into account statistically - in individual cases, the actual value differs from the statistic value.  The above-mentioned reasons lead to pieces of material with different lengths. An exact prediction of how many metres of finished and usable product will be produced, is not possible. The same applies to the number of pieces and their lengths.
  • DELIVERY TOLERANCES TO BE EXPECTED: over or under deliveries up to max. 15 %.

BEST PRACTICE IN HANDLING TECHNICAL TOLERANCES:

  • ORDER STOCK WARE: Your Tüchler advisor will select the optimum piece lengths from our stock and the delivery differences will be zero.
  • SPECIAL DYE OR SPECIAL QUANTITY ORDERS: Your Tüchler advisor will assist you in selecting the optimum quantity, so that you can fulfil the job requirements on the one hand and avoid overly generous allowances that cause unnecessary expenses.
